Producing cables for more than 110 years

The history of the family-run Kabelwerk Eupen AG begins in 1747 with the founding of the hemp rope factory “J. P. Bourseaux & Söhne”. At that time, the Bourseaux family manufactured jute ropes and hawsers in a small workshop. Around 150 years later, the brothers Carl and August Bourseaux combined their experience with a feel for the signs of the times and began producing electrical cables. This was a decision with a promising future, as cables and wires were soon being used across the board to transport electricity as electrification began.

The cable business developed well, the company management acquired additional buildings and implemented new production processes and techniques. In 1908, the first wire drawing machine was installed and Kabel und Gummiwerke Eupen AG was founded, which later became the public limited company “Kabelwerk Eupen AG”. The demand for cable products from Eupen grew steadily

Following the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, Kabelwerk Rhenania GmbH was founded in 1921 as a reliable subsidiary of Kabelwerk Eupen AG. From then on, Eupen belonged to Belgium and in order to gain access to the German market, the nearby site in Aachen-Brand was chosen.

At the beginning of the 1950s, the company switched from rubber insulation to modern plastic insulation. In 1995, the Brander plant specialised in the production of fibre optic cables, thus making the switch to the future.

In 2002, another important strategic step was taken and Kabelwerk Rhenania GmbH was established as the logistics centre and sales location for Kabelwerk Eupen AG’s cable products in the German market with a focus on distribution, energy supply companies, installers and industry. To this day, the VH-D department is firmly integrated into the sales structure and organisation chart of Kabelwerk Eupen AG.
